The First Step ... Partners in reading. Partners in writing. Partners in putting a writer's work into the books, magazines, and electronic devices held by readers.
You often hear, "writing is a lonely job". Yet, the refrain describes just one thread of a writer's life. The whole of a writer's life is woven from a fabric of connections. I'm a big fan of editors, to name one anchoring connection important to me. Agents, publishers of various kinds, artists and designers all contribute to the writer's fundamental purpose of telling a good, clear, story. And the reader. The invisible, evasive, elusive, demanding reader is the essential partner. My essential partners are kids. I write for children. My connections to young readers run through magazines like Aquila, in the United Kingdom and Highlights for Children and Odyssey, Adventures in Science, here at home. |
